Oberflächlich betrachtet scheint Simple Dreams ein verrücktes Stückwerk aus verschiedenen Stilen zu sein, vom freundlichen Countryrock-Remake von Buddy Hollys "It's So Easy", den düsteren Covers von Roy Orbisons "Blue Bayou" und Dolly Partons "I Never Will Marry" bis zu ausschweifenden Erzählungen über den Wahnsinn des Rock'n Roll wie "Tumbling Dice" von den Rolling Stones, Warren Zevons "Carmelita" und "Poor Poor Pitiful Me". Aber Ronstadt ist fähig, all das zusammenzuhalten und stellt so zugleich ihren interpretativen Tiefgang und ihre stilistische Bandbreite unter Beweis. Simple Dreams ist vielleicht Ronstadts abenteuerlustigstes rockorientiertes Album, und mal abgesehen von den Drums, die es eindeutig als Produkt der Siebziger kennzeichnen, funktioniert es auch heute noch.

Featuring a broader array of styles than any previous Linda Ronstadt record, Simple Dreams reconfirms her substantial talents as an interpretive singer. Ronstadt sings Dolly Parton ("I Never Will Marry") with the same conviction as the Rolling Stones ("Tumbling Dice"), and she manages to update Roy Orbison ("Blue Bayou") and direct attention to the caustic, fledgling singer/songwriter Warren Zevon ("Poor Poor Pitiful Me" and "Carmelita"). The consistently adventurous material and Ronstadt's powerful performance makes the record rival Heart Like a Wheel in sheer overall quality.
